Ways to Improve Loft Skylights in Your Tiny Home

Posted on

Tiny homes are designed to be minimalistic. They are also designed to use every aspect of space without cluttering up the area or causing the area to become unnecessarily cramped. One of the ways to make the space seem larger is to offer natural light into the area. Many tiny home plans have this option and include skylights along the roof of the home as well as in the loft or sleeping area. Before settling on a traditional skylight for the loft or the roof as a whole, consider the ways to improve the basic skylight and offer yourself a more comfortable environment.

Blackout Shades

Shades are an easy addition to your skylights. They can be placed on the interior of a panel if the skylights are dual-panel. This allows you to operate the blinds without concern for damaging them. One option that many people go with for skylight shades is blackout shades. There are several reasons for this option. For example, if you have windows downstairs, you may want to blackout the sunlight in the loft area to help maintain temperature and keep the sleeping area cool during the day. Another reason to consider blackout shades is for a darker sleeping area. This is especially true if you are near outdoor lights or if you need to sleep during the daytime hours.

Vented Skylight

You may decide that you want natural light, but you also want natural air as well. This could be to air out the sleeping area daily or to just have a cross breeze going within the entire tiny home. One way to do this is to use a vented skylight. Vented skylights allow you to open the skylight and allow fresh air into the area. You can opt for a skylight with or without a screen. The skylights are generally sealed to help protect from leaks when you close the vent. You can also find fans for your skylights that allow you to exhaust air from the area when the skylight is vented.

Heat Absorbing Tint

An issue people have with their skylight, regardless of the location, is the massive amount of heat that can pour in from the sun. This can make the sleeping area stuffy and can keep it humid. One way to reduce the excess heat is to choose a heat-absorbing tint for the window. This tint will still allow natural light into the space. It will also block the heat to help you maintain the comfort of the living space and the sleeping space.

These are just a few of the upgrades that can be made to traditional skylights. Remember, most skylights for tiny homes are scaled smaller than traditional residential skylights. For this reason, you may need a window contractor that can handle special requests and orders. This will allow you the ability to get the windows you want and the upgrades you want for your home.
